Abstract:

The oldest dated inscription in the Kathmandu Valley, originally brought to light by Bhagvanlal Indraji and later by Sylvain Lévi, is inscribed on a stone pillar at the temple of Changu Narayan. This article provides the text, a new translation, and new photographs of the inscription.

This book reproduces line drawings of the pantheon of deities described in chapter 6 of the Pratiṣṭhālakṣaṇasārasamuccaya from two 17th-century Nepalese manuscripts Drawing of the 64 Yoginīs according to the Devī-Purāṇa found in an appendix to both manuscripts are also reproduced. 

The line drawings from Nepal should prove to be of great importance to the study of Hindu iconography. Comprehensive and almost complete sets of illustrations of pantheons such as this one are rarely found. 

In addition to the line drawings, this volume reproduces the Sanskrit text of chapter 6 of the printed edition of the printed edition of the Pratiṣṭhālakṣaṇasārasamuccaya (published in Kathmandu in 1966), which is not accessible. The Pratiṣṭhālakṣaṇasārasamuccaya, also called Lakṣaṇasārasamuccaya, Lakṣaṇasaṅgraha and Lakṣaṇasamuccaya, is a text of the 11th or 12th century and is attributed to Vairocana. It is a work on the construction and installation of lingas compiled from various Agamas. The present book discusses its authorship and date, the contents of its individual chapters, and analyses in detail the iconographic features of the deities described in chapter 6.

Of the same Śāha lineage, Crown Prince Trailokya Vīra Vikrama Śāha (30 November 1847 - 30 March 1878) could not become King of Nepal due to his death at an early age of 30 as a Crown Prince. He met his death before his father King Surendra Vikrama Śāha, who died on 17 May 1881. Crown Prince Trailokya Vīra Vikrama Śāha gets his name from his mother Trailokya Rājya Lakṣmī Devī, the second wife and Queen of King Surendra. He had three wives, viz. Tārā Rājya Lakṣmī Devī, Lalit Rājya Lakṣmī Devī and Somagarva Divyeśvarī Rājya Lakṣmī Devī.

हिन्दु परम्परामा ठूलाठूला नदीहरूको सङ्गमलार्इ थप महत्त्वका साथ हेरिन्छ । नदीका तटहरू त पवित्र भए नै, त्यसमा पनि अझ दोभान वा त्रिवेणीहरूको पनि विशेष धार्मिक र सांस्कृतिक महत्त्व रहेको छ । यी दोभान वा त्रिवेणीहरूलार्इ प्रमुख तीर्थस्थल मानी श्राद्धादि कर्म गर्ने र विशेष अवसरहरूमा मेला नै भर्न जाने चलन समेत रहेको छ ।

काठमाडैाँको नदी संस्कृतिसँगै जोडिएको एक महत्त्वपूर्ण पक्ष नागपूजन पनि हो । नागहरूलार्इ पूजा गर्ने चलन हिन्दु परम्परा लगायत विविध अन्य लोक परम्परामा पनि पाइन्छ । काठमाडैाँ उपत्यका तलाउ हुँदै यहाँ विचरण गर्ने कर्कोटक आदि नागहरूका कथाहरू पनि अद्यापि सुन्न पाइन्छ ।
